S3 - Safe Space to speak

Listening to and representing young people on matters that affect them

S³ is a representative group for young people separate from traditional power structures, which is youth-led from the outset, and which will amplify and empower young voices.

Dyfodol Ni’s Young People’s Management Committee established Safe Space to Speak / Safle Saff i Siarad after they noted that the majority of young people want to feel represented, and listened to, by people in power who make decisions that affect them.

S³’s primary task will be to campaign for better services in support of young people’s mental health and wellbeing. It will begin in Ceredigion, but its aims are far more wide-reaching. S³ want to create a model that other counties and organisations can follow, particularly in relation to their ideal view of safe spaces.

Meet Our Members

Jack

Hello! My name is Jack and I’m 18 years old. I don’t live in Ceredigion, but I do spend most of my free time in Ceredigion and have a strong connection with the community and history, especially around Cardigan. I am currently on the path to study medicine and I hope to one day be a doctor in the Royal Army Medical Corps.

One thing I am passionate about is Martial Arts. I am a proud member of the Welsh National Team for Martial Arts; I compete fairly regularly, and have won multiple gold medals.

In contrast, I also enjoy calm and peaceful activities like knitting and baking, that help to slow the thought rush in my mind and generally enrich my mental health.

A pet peeve of mine is seeing young people not be taken seriously!! There is nothing worse than “the adults are talking” and “I know better because I’m an adult.”

My favourite quote is from Sun Tzu’s The Art of War: “He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight”

Martha

Hello, my name is Martha! I am 19 years old and live just outside of Ceredigion, however I spend a lot of my time there so know a lot about the area.

I currently run my own mobile beauty business called Beauty By Martha :). I am very passionate about skincare and embracing natural features through beauty treatments.

My favourite quote is “happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” A Dumbledore quote from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. It shows that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

I joined S3 because I want to make a positive impact on the future for young people! Getting to meet and be in contact with important people has been amazing and I really feel like we are making a change!

Theo

Hello, I’m from mid-Wales, Ceredigion, representing the S3 committee. Growing up in Ceredigion, I’ve always felt deeply connected to the community and its culture. I’m passionate about championing progress and supporting our youth through the ‘Safe Space to Speak’ initiative. Inspired by the quote “Make Good Trouble,” I stand firm in my efforts to advocate for change and spread important messages on behalf of young people.

Since joining in 2023, I’ve been heavily involved in our latest project, “Feelz on Wheelz / Llyw a Byw” collaborating with the committee to bring it to life. Our research-driven approach ensures that our new mobile service reaches areas most in need, promoting inclusivity and engagement across Ceredigion.

My time spent in youth spaces like Depot, GOATS, and Ceredigion Youth Services has shown me the power of creating welcoming environments. Whether it’s a casual hangout or a heartfelt conversation, our outreach promises to be engaging and uplifting.

Outside of my work with S3 , I enjoy creative projects, music compositions, and being a performance artist. I bring supportive teamwork, active listening, and creative input to S3 , driven by a commitment to address youth issues in the community.

A quote that resonates with my life experiences is, “Smooth seas do not make skilful sailors” reflecting the strength and growth I’ve gained from overcoming challenges.

Rowan

My name is Rowan, I am 25 years old and live in Aberystwyth.

I study veterinary bioscience and hope to work within veterinary research or animal care in the future. I am incredibly close with nature and concerned by pollution of habitats and biodiversity loss. In my spare time I enjoy reading research papers around health science, pathology or climate and exploring rural off tracks as well as brewing beers and wines.

I take a humanistic approach when engaging with myself and other people as the world can be full of so much unnecessary prejudice and hate. Safeguarding vulnerable people is something I am passionate about and believe each person is responsible of doing so.

Mental health provision in Ceredigion is another major concern of mine and is something I will always advocate, until proper improvement is made. Many young people have, and are falling through safety nets. I hope my time at S3 is impactful too as many young people as possible.

Max

Hello, my name is Max and I am 23 years old.

I live in Lampeter with ties to Newport and North Wales.

I am a passionate voice for the arts, having danced, trained and competed professionally both here in Wales as well as internationally. I also produce artwork locally as well as for online commissions.

I am currently working with Stage Goats in Lampeter working towards a stage production for young people as well as operating the youth cafe.

I like to relax by playing guitar and piano as well as reading. From my background and training, I am very aware of how it feels for young people to be given little voice, agency and support.

Adair

Hi, my name is Adair (he/they/she) and I’m 20 years old. I live in Aberystwyth, where I moved for university to study creative writing and history. I’ve paused my studies to work full-time, and I’m unsure what I want to study in the future (there are so many interesting
things!), but I know I want to help people. I’m passionate about children’s rights, particularly concerning the right and ability to leave abusive situations. I joined S3 because I want to help elevate youth voices, because I don’t think children are given enough human rights and power in this world.

My hobbies include music, writing, knitting, and drawing. I love to write songs and play the guitar, it’s great for catharsis. Knitting gives my hands something to do while I watch tv and I find it immensely satisfying to see a sweater come together over time. I love the joy that comes from creating things, it’s an amazing feeling to gift a friend a piece of art you made just for them, or put your ideas into a zine and put it somewhere for a stranger to find.

One of my favourite quotes is: “What could love, the unsolved mystery, count for in the face of this possession and self-assertion which she suddenly recognized as the strongest impulse of her being!” by Kate Chopin, The Story of an Hour (1894).

Sophie

Hey its Soph here! I am 24 and have lived in Ceredigion for 15 years. My upbringing was pretty rural, living in a house on a hill, with only 2 neighbours and the nearest town 30 minutes away.

I am currently studying biology in Aber Uni, with no real set plan but an interest for research and environmental health.

I am what you would call a hobby hoarder. I like to do a-bit of everything. Flow arts are my pastime, but i love to indulge in anything that is creative and expressive.

My pet peeve is that i have shelves full of books but only read the same 10 or so on repeat, yet i insist on buying more. It is fuelled by my want to learn but hindered by my ability to sit still- this is where audiobooks however, are becoming a close friend of mine.

A favourite quote of mine is from the spiritual teach Ram Dads: ‘it is important to expect nothing, to take every experience, including the negative ones, as merely steps on the path, and to proceed.”

Kai

Hey! My name is Kai, and I am 18 years old. I have lived in Ceredigion ever since I was 6 and have always wanted to get involved in my local community, something I’ve been unable to do until recently. Through my membership of S³ , I am continuing a desired career path in politics where now I can help to express the voices of young people to those who can make change, and in future, hope to be an individual who can make change listening to those like me now fighting for
their voices and opinions to be heard.

I live quite a quiet and calm life. My interests are focused on what I can do in the comfort of my own home, activities like reading, socialising, and typically, video gaming. These link in closely to my interests such as economics, history, and politics so when I’m having the ever-so-common debates with my friends, to beat me is a tough challenge.

Although the quiet life is nice, I’ve been looking to get out more and S³ is one of the ways I’m doing that. Theory is all well but in practice, something as big as this, representing the entirety of Ceredigion and possibly other counties, is a huge step for me. I’m looking forward to finally being able to act on our grievances and commit to making the lives of youths better for times to come. But for now, I take life one step at a time and there are a lot of steps to go before we reach the top.

Marcus

Hi, my name is Marcus, I am 24 years old. I am originally from Buckinghamshire. Growing up in a small countryside village, I never felt like they understood me as I was gay and epileptic, which always made me hide a part of myself.

Just before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, me and my mum moved up to Wales. We first lived in Cilcennin, which had quite a bad effect on my mental health. We now live in Llanon, where I have complete freedom to do what I want.

In Llanon, we live right next to the sea, which is nice for me to walk my dogs on because they love the beach. I also love reading; I find it relaxing. I am also a gamer, so when not reading I am gaming, which I like to think is relaxing as well.

One of my favorite quotes is, “Live the life you love, love the life you live”.

S3 Manifesto Cover - Dyfodol Ni

S³ have created a manifesto, which you can see above. This document outlines their values and their campaign aims. The development of more static safe spaces is their first goal. As the funding for Dyfodol Ni won’t stretch to cover creating these static safe spaces, Sᶾ will lobby for additional funding over the coming years and work with Partners to launch static safe spaces all over the county.

They will also lobby those in power to listen to young people’s views and needs regarding the transportation system. Ceredigion is a very rural county, and cuts to services are disadvantaging young people, who are less likely to be able to drive (or absolutely unable to drive if they’re under 17). This cuts down on employability prospects, but crucially to Dyfodol Ni’s aims, can be a barrier to young people accessing services or appointments. It’s as simple as: if it’s really difficult to get to your appointment, you’re not as likely to go!

They aim to be unapologetic in speaking truth to power for the benefit of young people, and empowering other young people to use their voices for change.

If you’re passionate about Dyfodol Ni’s youth-led stance, and the issues the project is keen to tackle, have a passion to make things better for everyone, and care about promoting issues that are important to young people, then please get in touch or download our recruitment pack.
